• "2nd UA prof defends Climategate e-mails," Dec. 7 on A1, inaccurately stated an estimate from a 1998 study of how long it had been since global temperatures were as warm as in the 1990s. The study, by the University of Arizona's Malcolm Hughes and two colleagues, said 1990s temperatures were warmer than in any decade since about A.D. 1400. The story also inaccurately said a tactic of trying to hide a decline in global temperatures shown by tree-ring records since 1960 was used in studies by Michael Mann of Penn State University and Keith Briffa of East Anglia University. Neither researcher used that tactic in a published paper. Thirdly, the story inaccurately reported that Hughes and other scholars formerly delayed releasing scientific data underlying their studies. Now, as then, they release the data as their studies are published.
